Letha Jane Walburn

Ottawa — Graveside service for Letha Jane Walburn, 91, Ottawa, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, with the Rev. Robert Loudon of the North Baptist Church officiating.
Mrs. Walburn died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar in Lawrence.
She was born Nov. 22, 1917, northwest of Pomona in the Appanoose community, the daughter of Ulysses S. and Elsie T. Bown Mitchell.
Mrs. Walburn had been a resident of Ottawa since 1942. She was a homemaker and also assisted her husband in the family business, Walburn’s Garage, until his retirement in 1972. Mrs. Walburn had also worked in the food service department for the Ottawa school district.
She was a member of the Hawthorne PTA, Modernettes EHU, Crochet Circle, The Happy Hour Club, M&E Club, Jolly 60s, Oasis Club and the Eagles Auxiliary. She was a member and former deaconess of the North Baptist Church and the Friendly Forum Sunday school class. She helped with the monthly church bulletins for many years.
She married Gerald F. Walburn on Nov. 4, 1937, in Topeka. He died May 2, 1975.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lee Mitchell, Independence, Kan., and Robert Mitchell, Waxahachie, Texas; a son, Larry Walburn, Lawrence; a daughter-in-law, Delores Walburn; two grandchildren, Debra Kay Walburn and Mark Wayne Thornton; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Mulanax.
Survivors include a son, John Walburn, Ottawa; a daughter, Peggy Thornton, Lyndon; a daughter-in-law, Judy Walburn, Lawrence; a sister, Dorothy Fredricks, Ottawa; a brother, Jerry Mitchell, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa.
