Carl E. Van Hoesen 1923 - 2009 Lawrence
Funeral services for Carl E. “Gene” Van Hoesen, 85, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow in Prairie City Cemetery, Baldwin City.
Mr. Van Hoesen died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at his home.
He was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Willow Springs Township, the son of Carl V. and Alice Gleason Van Hoesen. He was raised by his father and stepmother, Elnora Anderson Van Hoesen.
Mr. Van Hoesen attended rural schools in Douglas County and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1941.
He served three years on a submarine chaser crew in the Pacific theater during World War II.
Mr. Van Hoesen retired from Farmland Industries as a foreman in 1986 after 33 years of service.
He was an active member of the Kaw Valley Bluebird Association. He attended First United Methodist Church.
He married JoAnn Churchbaugh on April 10, 1946, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Bob and wife Barbara, Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Cheryl Harrod and husband Les, Lawrence; a sister, Marion Sullivan and husband Ed, St. Mary’s, Ohio; four grandchildren, Matthew and Lee Ann Van Hoesen, Emily Ford and Megan Harrod; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will meet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to Baker University or Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care, sent in care of the mortuary.
