Ralph W. Vertner

Emporia — Funeral services for Ralph W. Vertner, 78, Emporia, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church in Emporia. Military honors will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Lowry-Funston Post 1980 and American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5. Burial will be in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Vertner died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at his home in Emporia.
He was born Oct. 17, 1930, in Solomon, the son of Harry Henry and Ella Iverson Vertner. He graduated from Solomon High School in 1948.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War until he was discharged in December of 1954.
Mr. Vertner was a meat cutter and retired from Reebles Country Mart. He had worked for A&P grocery stores around Kansas most of his working career.
He was a member of the American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 and Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church.
He married Norma Yvonne Quested on Feb. 1, 1957, in Solomon. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2007.
One grandson also died earlier.
Survivors include a son, Dan, Emporia; two daughters, Susan Ashburn, Lawrence, and Pam Purdum, Emporia; one grandson; and one brother, Paul, Littleton, Colo.
