Verda Lee Miller Shields

El Dorado — Funeral services for Verda Lee Miller Shields, 89, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Carlson Funeral Home, 200 S. Star St., El Dorado.
Mrs. Shields died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.
She was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Vernon Lee and Nettie Marie Pierson Miller. She graduated from high school in Bethel in 1937 and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Kansas University in 1943.
Mrs. Shields worked as a pediatric nurse at KU Medical Center. During World War II, she served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.
She and her husband moved to El Dorado in 1951. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and volunteered for many years in the hospital gift shop. She volunteered for the Red Cross bloodmobile for more than 50 years and served on the Red Cross board.
Mrs. Shields and her husband moved to Lawrence in 2006.
She married James M. Shields Jr. in 1943. He survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Nancy Nowlin and husband Stewart, Lawrence, and Suzanne Shields and husband Randy Porter, Wichita; three sons, Thomas Shields and wife Shannon, Manhattan, Steven Shields and wife Susan, Chesterfield, Mo., and Joseph Shields and wife Ann Fidler, Athens, Ohio; and eight grandchildren, Patrick and Eric Nowlin and Katherine, Ian, Marissa, Seth, Nicholas and Jonathan Shields.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Margaret Turner and Sally Heinz; and a brother, Donald J. Miller.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. before services Monday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Bluestem Chapter of the American Red Cross.
