Evelyn Schmidt

Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn Schmidt, 86, Wamego, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 1006 Eighth St., Wamego.
Mrs. Schmidt died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center in Wamego.
She was born on Nov. 11, 1922, in Marysville, the daughter of Henry and Mabel Cooper Marquardt. She graduated from Marysville High School in 1940.
Mrs. Schmidt and her husband lived in Marysville, Kansas City, Hays, Goodland and Manhattan before settling in Wamego. She was a day care provider for many children in the area for more than 30 years.
She enjoyed gardening, watching Kansas State and Kansas University basketball games and “Wheel of Fortune,” and going to casinos.
She married Sylvester Schmidt on Oct. 13, 1942. He preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1990.
She also was preceded in death by a son, James, in 1949; a granddaughter, Brenda Fechter in 1968; three grandsons, Timothy Harris in 1971, Joseph Richardson in 1996 and Justin Stratton in 2004; and a sister, Helen Scott in 2008.
Survivors include five sons, Steve Schmidt, Parkville, Mo., David Schmidt, Onaga, Stan and John Schmidt, both of Wamego, and Mike Schmidt, Topeka; six daughters, Janet Richardson, Topeka, Jane Fechter, Emporia, Janelle Harris and Mary Labbe, both of Wamego, Jeanne Newton, Hendersonville, Tenn., and Lori Montgomery, Lawrence; four sisters, Kathleen Leikam, Salina, Maxine Farrell, Beatrice, Neb., Marilyn Anderson, Blue Springs, Mo., and Joan Rosette, Wheatridge, Colo.; three brothers, Gary and Roger Marquardt, both of Kansas City, Kan., and Don Marquardt, Marysville; a sister-in-law, Dolores Schmidt, San Diego; 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Friends may call beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at Stewart Funeral Home, 4370 Salzer Road, Wamego. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, after which the family will meet friends until 8:30 p.m.
