Martha Francis Thornton

Funeral services for Martha Francis Thornton, 75, Lawrence, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Thornton died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 11, 1933, in Lawrence, the daughter of Bernard J. and Effie D. Belt Hill. She attended Lawrence schools.

Mrs. Thornton was a homemaker. She was a member of the Jayhawk Camping Club, and enjoyed Kansas University basketball games and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.
She married James R. Thornton in Lawrence. He died Aug. 26, 2002. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Hill, and a sister, Dorothy Smith.

Survivors include a son, Larry Thornton and wife Shelly, Lawrence; two daughters, Pamela Huff and husband Raymond, Tonganoxie, and Terri Thornton, Lawrence; a sister, Juanita Transmeier, Oskaloosa; three grandchildren, Christina Alexander, Lyndsay Hobbs, and Andy Thornton; and three great-grandchildren, Cooper, Parker, and Austin Alexander.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, or Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association, Rehabilitation, and Hospice Care, sent in care of the funeral home.
