Esther Gurian 1910 - 2008 White Plains
Ridgewood, N.Y. - Graveside services for Esther Gurian, 98, White Plains, will be at 10 a.m. Sunday in Mount Judah Cemetery in Ridgewood.Mrs. Gurian died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, of cardiac arrest at Briarcliff Manor in New York.She was born April 9, 1910, in New York City, the daughter of Philip Glick and Ida Chafetz. She attended Textile High School in New York and Hunter College, Teachers' Training School. She received a degree in special education. She was a resident of Brandon Woods at Alvamar in Lawrence, Kan., from 1991 to 2007.Mrs. Gurian was a teacher at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn from 1954 to 1977. She was active in the United Federation of Teachers of New York.She married Louis Gurian on Sept. 1, 1937, in New York. He preceded her in death.Survivors include two daughters, Frances Breslauer and husband S. Daniel, White Plains, and Eda Lesk and husband Arthur, State College, Pa.; four grandchildren, Don Breslauer, Tamar Breslauer, Victor Lesk and Valerie Womble; and three great-grandchildren, Rohini and Raka Banerjee, and Sophie Breslauer.The family will receive friends after the burial services Sunday at the home of Fran and Dan Breslauer, 2 Canfield Ave., Apt. 221, in White Plains. The family suggests memorials to the National Yiddish Book Center, 1021 West St., Amherst, MA 01002.The I.J. Morris funeral home in Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.
