Lewis Jerome Joler

Funeral services for Lewis Jerome Joler, 88, Lawrence, will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Concordia.Mr. Joler died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at Pioneer Ridge Healthcare in Lawrence.He was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Waterville, Maine, the son of Napoleon and Lumina Jolin. He graduated from Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine, in 1937 and later attended St. Benedict’s College in Atchison for two years. He moved from Concordia to Lawrence in 1985.Mr. Joler joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II and saw duty at Saipan. After the war he remained in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1971. He worked for Sears, Firestone and Corn Products before opening Joler Real Estate and Insurance in 1956, all in Concordia. He worked with his wife in their real estate/insurance business for almost 30 years in Concordia and Lawrence before they retired in the early 1990s. He was also a builder and developer.Mr. Joler was a member of Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Concordia and coached the church-sponsored Little League baseball team in the 1960s. He was a member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Lawrence. He married Charlotte Joyce Carbutt on Jan. 22, 1944. She survives, of Lawrence.Other survivors include a daughter, Jan Jay and husband Paul, Harmony, Pa.; two sons, Ron and wife Linda, and Jeff and wife Shana, both of Lawrence; a brother, Robert Jolin, Independence, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Cecilia Tardiff; and seven brothers, Nelson, Bernard, Frances, Herman and Richard Jolin, and Leonel and Emmanual “Mike” Joler.
