Helen McDaniel

Graveside services for Helen McDaniel, 86, Columbia, Mo., will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. Ms. McDaniel died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at her home.She was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Fowler, the daughter of William Riley McDaniel and Estelle Ritter. She grew up in Carthage, Mo., and also lived in Wathena before she moved to Lawrence in 1952. She returned to Lawrence in 1987 and then to Columbia in 2007.Ms. McDaniel owned and operated the North Side Cafe in the late 1960s. She worked as a waitress and cook at Jim Starr’s and Big Boy. She also worked at the Eldridge Hotel, El Matador Restaurant and Raney’s Drug Store, all in Lawrence, Campbell’s Soup in Camden, N.J., Phi Kappa Phi fraternity at Kansas University and at the University of Missouri.She married Cecil Baker in 1939 in Carthage, Mo. He died Sept. 17, 1979. Ms. McDaniel was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Stephens, in 1978. Survivors include a son, John Baker, Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Geraldine Payne, Eudora; two sisters, Beulah West, Warrensburg, Mo., and Faye Cole, Carthage Mo.; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
