Mary Coletta Burkhardt Lyman

Graveside services for Mary Coletta Burkhardt Lyman, 91, Lawrence, will be in Atascadero, Calif., and Port Allegheny, Pa., where her ashes will be buried near loved ones. A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Medicalodges in Eudora.Mrs. Lyman died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Medicalodges.She was born Dec. 14, 1916, in Corry, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Connell Burkhardt. She graduated from Edinboro State Teachers College in Pennsylvania. She moved to Lawrence in 1996.Mrs. Lyman taught high school level art and English in Potsdam, N.Y. She accepted a teaching position in Atascadero, Calif., after World War II. She also taught in Farmington, N.M. She had also lived in Albuquerque, N.M., El Paso, Texas, Barrington, Ill., and Phoenix.She was a member of the Army Corps of Engineers Wives. She enjoyed music, literature, politics, current events, bridge, traveling, meeting new people and counseling people who struggled with addictions.She married Robert Joseph Lyman. He died in 1968. Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Lyman and husband Michael Fox, and Ellyn Lyman; a son, G. Hudson Lyman and wife Barbara Ramey; three grandchildren, Lyman and Lena Fox, and Preston Lyman; a niece; and four nephews. The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Schools Foundation in honor of the Coletta B.
