Margaret Swafford

Memorial services for Margaret Swafford, 93, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery. Mrs. Swafford died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.She was born June 25, 1915, in Chicago, the daughter of Ira Nicholas and Tessie Naomi Huber Taylor. Mrs. Swafford worked as an assistant registrar at Sterling College from 1977 until she retired in 1980. She was previously assistant dean of admissions and records at Hutchinson Community Junior College from 1961 to 1976.She was a member of the Methodist Church since 1927 and First United Methodist Church in Lawrence since 1980. She was an active volunteer in Hutchinson and Lawrence with the Girl Scouts, Red Cross, PTA and Quail Run School. She was a 25-year member and past president of the No Name Study Club, an honorary member of University Women’s Club and a former member of the University Bridge Club. Mrs. Swafford enjoyed playing bridge and canasta, knitting, crocheting, making quilts and other types of handiwork. She was an avid sports fan.She married Walter Allen Swafford on Nov. 25, 1934, in Hutchinson. He died July 16, 1988.Mrs. Swafford was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.Survivors include a daughter, Kay Henry and husband, Jim, Lawrence; a niece, Ann Kendall and husband Larry, Wildwood, Mo.; five grandchildren, Barb Henry, Jennifer McWilliams, Greg Kendall, Tracy Carney and Debbie Brummit; 10 great-grandchildren, Brogan and Ian McWilliams, Will, Andrew and Katy Kendall, Abby, Evan, Beau and Luci Carney and Luke Brummit; a brother in-law; two nieces; and four nephews.
