Marshall E. Finney

A joint memorial service for Marshall E. Finney, 93, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 25 at First United Methodist Church in Garden City.Mr. Finney died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence.He was born Oct. 28, 1914, in Casey, Ill., the son of Clifford and Nelle Myers Finney. He graduated from Virgil High School in 1932 and attended Emporia State College for two years. He was a resident of Garden City for 48 years and moved to Lawrence in 2002.Mr. Finney served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attained the rank of sergeant. He attended basic training at Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Ark., and served as a basic training infantry instructor. He was transferred to the European front in 1944 and served in the 79th Infantry Division as a noncommissioned officer in combat until wounded in eastern France. He received the Purple Heart.He retired as manager of the Garden City Sherwin-Williams Co. in 1979. He previously was a branch manager of Sherwin-Williams in Arkansas City, Kan.; San Angelo, Texas; and Salina.Mr. Finney served on the Finney County Red Cross Board, Garden City Zoning Board of Appeals, Finney County Public Library Board, Finney County Committee on Aging and Sandhills Arts Association. He was a member of the Garden City Lions Club, Rotary, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Elks, Friends of the Zoo, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Senior Citizen Volunteers and First Methodist Church.He married Patricia “Pat” Haynes on Dec. 24, 1941, in Arkansas City, Kan. She preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Michael D., Happy, Texas; a daughter, Marsha E.
