John Ross Martin

Funeral services for John Ross Martin, 67, Shawnee Mission, will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa.Mr. Martin died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at Garden Terrace of Overland Park nursing home.He was born April 15, 1941, in Ottawa, the son of Harry William and Helen Lucile Martin. He was the great-grandson of famed Tall Tale Postcard creator William Harrison “Dad” Martin of Ottawa.Mr. Martin graduated from Ottawa High School in 1959 and attended Kansas University, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1966 and received a master’s degree in international business from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix in 1968. He also earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Washburn University School of Law in 1973.Mr. Martin was an interpreter with the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1965. He was director of marketing, Southeast Asia, for Shure Brothers Electronics from 1968 to 1970. He was executive director and lobbyist for the Kansas Petroleum Council in Topeka from 1980 to 1991. He developed several educational computer games for the Macintosh in the mid-1990s that were sold around the world.Survivors include two daughters, Staci Baird and husband Jay, San Francisco, and Sheri Martin, Seattle.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Harry Edward Martin and Judy Lister Martin, Overland Park; and two nieces, Allison Stone and Lauren Martin.He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shannon Martin, in 2001.The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the services at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.The family suggests memorials to the Heart of America Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 3846 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208.
