Dr. Howard A. Dinsdale

A Celebration of Life service for Dr. Howard A. Dinsdale, Lincoln, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lincoln. Inurnment will be later at the church’s colombarium.Dr. Dinsdale died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at his home. He donated his body to the Anatomical Board of the state of Nebraska.He was born in Palmer, Neb., the son of George and Rena Dinsdale. He graduated from Palmer High School, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.Dr. Dinsdale served two years in the Army as head of the eye clinic at Fort Jackson, S.C. He practiced ophthalmology in St. Paul, Minn., for seven years, then moved to Lincoln and practiced until he retired in 1989 following an automobile accident that left him a quadriplegic.He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, a member of the choir and as a trustee on the Westminster Foundation. He was also a member of Phi Delta Theta, Phi Rho Sigma, Phi Beta Kappa, the Country Club of Lincoln, Candlelight Club and Lincoln Executive Club. He served on the boards of the Madonna Rehabilitation Foundation, Nebraska Repertory Theatre and Lincoln Young Life Committee. His professional associations included the American Academy of Opthamology, American Medical Association, Nebraska Academy of Opthamology, Nebraska Medical Association and the Lancaster County Medical Society.He married Barbara Gilmore, and they shared 54 years of marriage. She survives.Other survivors include a son, Robert and wife Katherine, Lawrence, Kan.; a daughter, Nancy Rovenstine and husband Mark, Bartlesville, Okla.; six grandchildren, Sarah, Anne and Carolyn Dinsdale and Andrew, Phillip and Benjamin Rovenstine; and a caregiver, Dennis Newman, Lincoln.The family suggests memorials to Westminster Presbyterian Church Foundation, 2110 Sheridan Blvd., Lincoln, NE 68502, or the University of Nebraska Foundation Fund No. 10273 in support of the Low Vision Center, 8712 West Dodge, Suite 100, Omaha, NE 68114.Online condolences may be sent at www.roperandsons.com.
