Lloyd L. Sponholtz

Memorial services for Lloyd L. Sponholtz, 71, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Private burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery.Mr. Sponholtz died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at his home.He was born Dec. 31, 1936, in Chicago, the son of Frank and Edna Voltz Sponholtz. He received an undergraduate degree from Valparaiso University, a master’s from Marquette University and a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. He moved to Kansas in 1967.Mr. Sponholtz was associate professor of history at Kansas University and served as director of Mount Oread Scholars. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening.He married Charlotte Ann Bendyk on May 31, 1969, in Pittsburgh. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Scott and wife Mandy, Lawrence, and Todd and wife Linda, Boston; two daughters, Pamela Sponholtz and husband Shannon Rukauf, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Cheri Sponholtz, Kansas City, Mo.; and a granddaughter, Morgan Jane Sponholtz.He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, LaVerne Moak and Lee Wnuk.Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.The family suggests memorials to the KU Endowment Association, sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at rumsey-yost.com.
