Muriel Bernice Wood 1914 - 2008 Olathe
Services for Muriel Bernice Wood, 94, Olathe, will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe. Graveside services will at 11 a.m. Saturday in Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center.Mrs. Wood died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, after a brief illness.She was born June 14, 1914, in Clay Center, the daughter of Alvin Luther Williamson and Ida Lena McKee. She grew up in Clay Center and lived briefly in Seattle. She attended high school at the Bishop's School in La Jolla, Calif. She graduated from Kansas University in 1935, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She lived in Pittsburg, Kan., for more than 60 years and moved to Olathe in 2006.Mrs. Wood served many years as a Republican precinct committeewoman. She was a past president of the CJ Chapter of PEO in Pittsburg. She was a world traveler. She visited most U.S. states and toured more than 25 countries later in life. She married Dr. Douglas Hodges Wood, of Madison, Wis., on May 3, 1939. Dr. Wood died in 1984.Survivors include three sons, Lauren Wood and wife Gail, and Gordon Wood and wife Christine, all of Overland Park, and Keith Wood and wife Barbara, Lawrence; a daughter, Muriel Lee Wood Beaver, Olathe; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home before the services.The family suggests memorials to the Kansas University Endowment Association general scholarship fund or Legacy Society Endowment at Mount Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg, Kan., sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.penwellgabel.com">penwellgabel.com</a>.
