Charles Gerard Fiffe 1925 - 2008 Junction City

Mass of Christian Burial for Charles Gerard Fiffe, 83, Junction City, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Xavier's Catholic Church in Junction City. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary's Cemetery.Mr. Fiffe died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Geary Community Hospital.He was born March 21, 1925, in Aurora, the son of Alfred A. and Marie Louise Collette Fiffe. He attended Sacred Heart Schools in Salina. He later received a teaching degree from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, where he played basketball and earned All American Honors, All District Honors and was the first player in school history to earn All Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference four years in a row.Mr. Fiffe served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from June 1943 to April 1946. He started to teach at Junction City High School in the fall of 1950, where he was a business teacher, coach and mentor for 38 years.He served as head golf coach, head basketball coach, cross country coach, girl's volleyball coach and assistant football coach, scorekeeper for boy's basketball and a driver's education teacher during the summer months for 33 years. The south gymnasium of Junction City High School was named in his honor in May 1996.He was a member of St. Xavier's Catholic Church, where he served as sacristan for many years. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Retired Teacher's Association of Junction City and the American Legion. He enjoyed attending daily Mass, golfing and spending time with family and friends.Mr. Fiffe married Isabelle on Nov. 25, 1950, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina. She died Oct. 31, 1992.He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Romaine and Gerald; a sister, Dorothy Rome; and a son-in-law, Charles White.Survivors include a brother, Alfred and wife Irene, Hutchinson; a sister, Gladys Smith, Atlanta; four daughters, Collette Matthews and husband Steve, and Laurie Crites and husband Clifford II, all of Junction City, Diane White, Lawrence, and Marie Larsen and husband Greg, Omaha, Neb.; a son, Jon Pierre and wife Sandra, Chapman; 14 grandchildren, Michelle Begnoche, Dana, Leslie, Nicole and Steven Matthews, Amber, Kristin and Clifford Crites III, Jennifer and David White, Jessica Oshel, and Kyle, Mallory and Ryan Larsen; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Crites and Madison Oshel; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at St. Xavier's Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.Memorial contributions may be given to the Charlie Fiffe Scholarship; St. Xavier's Parish Foundation; J.C.
