Funeral services for Robert Eugene Luman, 81, Hutchinson, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson, with the Rev. John Warring presiding. Graveside services with a U.S. Navy Honor Guard will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hutchinson.Mr. Luman died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson.He was born June 2, 1927, in Hutchinson, the son of Daniel “Doc” and Hazel A. Hutton Smyres. He attended Nickerson and Hutchinson schools. Mr. Luman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a mechanic for Morton Salt Company for 40 years and retired in 1989. He was also a volunteer for RSVP, and was active at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center. He married Clara C. Nusser on March 28, 1948, in Hutchinson. She died June 15, 2006. He also was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; four brothers, Charles Wilbur, Raymond, Leonard and Darrell; and two sisters, Velda Cavanaugh and Lois Buggeln.Survivors include three sons, Mike and wife Terry, Nickerson, David and wife Debbie, Lawrence, and Steve and wife Barbara, Hutchinson; two daughters, Betty Jo Luman Schmickle and husband Joe, Hutchinson, and Ronda Bigger and husband Jim, Alamogordo, N.M.; a sister, Alice Johnson, Hutchinson; two stepsisters, Maxine McMurray and Marie Treaster, both of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a companion, Dona Taggart, Hutchinson.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson.The family suggests memorials to the Salvation Army or the Delos V.
