Mary Irene Walrafen 1918 - 2008 Meriden

Funeral services for Mary Irene Walrafen, 90, Meriden, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Meriden United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Meriden Cemetery.Mrs. Walrafen died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Linnwood Plus Care home in Valley Falls.She was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Peabody, the daughter of Howard Alden and Hazel Edith Runyon Ray. She graduated from Peabody High School in 1936 and attended Emporia Teachers College. She moved to Meriden in 1989.Mrs. Walrafen was a homemaker. She was a member of the Meriden United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Order of Eastern Star Meriden Chapter 399, Beaucrant Assembly of Topeka 24 and Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Trinity Shrine 7, in Topeka.She married Norman Orlo Walrafen on Oct. 28, 1939, in Nebraska. He died Oct. 6, 2004.She was also preceded in death by a grandson.Survivors include a son, Verne Walrafen, Ozawkie; a daughter, Juanita Kay Shipley, Blaine, Wash.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Barnett-Chapel Oaks Meriden Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour Thursday at the church with Order of Eastern Star services conducted by O.E.S.
