Doug Guess

Funeral services for Doug Guess, 69, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery at Big Springs. Dr. Guess died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born on Aug. 11, 1939, in Olathe, the son of Paul Annon and Dorothy Rose Guess.He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kansas University in 1961 and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from KU in 1967. In 1968, he received his doctorate of education in special education from KU.Dr. Guess was a professor emeritus at KU. He worked in special education for 25 years until he retired in 2002. Prior to that, he had worked at KNI for 15 years.He was a member of Big Springs United Methodist Church. He served on the pastor parish relation committee. He was the first elected president of Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. He was given the lifetime achievement award from TASH and also received a nationally recognized award from ARC. He served on the board of the Lawrence Community Shelter. He was also a member of the Kansas Land Trust and the Kansas Land Institute. He married Emma Jean Hinderliter on June 1, 1963. They were divorced. He married Ruth Ann Yager Bundy on Aug. 1, 1998. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Bradley and wife Ellen, Camden Point, Mo., and Trent and wife Thuy, Shawnee; a stepdaughter, Amy Bundy Lake and husband Steve, Fort Worth, Texas; a stepson, Joe Bundy and fiance Aviva Leebow; a brother, Paul A. Guess Jr.; and eight grandchildren, Anna, Joel, Laura, Matthew, Olivia and Audrey Guess and Brady and Jordan Lake.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
