Daniel Armit Young 1932 - 2008 Lawrence
Private services for Daniel Armit Young, 76, Lawrence, will be at a later date. Inurnment will be in Grace Cathedral Columbarium in Topeka.Mr. Young died May 19, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born March 5, 1932, in Abilene, the son of Yssel Yvette and Mary Armit Wood Young. He graduated from University High School in Lawrence and Kansas University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business. He graduated from the KU law school and was admitted to the practice of law in Kansas in 1960. He was also admitted as attorney in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. Mr. Young served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a first lieutenant and was honorably discharged in 1956. He worked in the personnel office at Sheraton Cadillac Hotel and was a salesman for Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co. He was a technical officer for the U.S. Census Bureau District Office in Lawrence. He opened a private law practice in 1960 and was appointed assistant county attorney for Douglas County in 1963. He took office as county attorney in 1967 and was elected to a second term. He was appointed county counselor for Douglas County in 1971 and began working at the Kansas Department of Insurance Oct. 1, 1985, and retired in 1992.He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and then Phi Delta Phi. He was also a member of the Douglas County American Bar Association. He was president of the Kansas County Attorney's Association from 1967 to 1968 and the Douglas County Bar Association in 1971.Mr. Young married Ann Dickas Chambliss in Reno, Nev. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Terry Ann Beers and husband Ron, Montgomery, Ala., four stepsons, Dan Chambliss and wife Marcia, Sam and wife Renee, and Gordon and wife Lisa, all of Montgomery, Ala., and Dave Chambliss and wife Sherrie, Gainsville, Ga.; a sister, Joan Meyers, Ann Arbor, Mich.; 13 stepgrandchildren; and 4 stepgreat-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Wood Young, in 1942.The family suggests memorials to American Legion Dorsey Liberty Post 14 or the Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.warrenmcelwain.com">www.warrenmcelwain.com</a>, subject: Young.
