Melvin Fishburn

Private family services for Melvin Fishburn, 80, Angels Camp, will be at a later date. Mr. Fishburn died Friday, April 25, 2008.He was born Sept. 2, 1927, near Lone Star, Kan. He graduated from Lawrence High School and McPherson College in McPherson, Kan., where he played football and baseball.Mr. Fishburn taught in many small towns in Kansas and coached football, basketball and track at Bentley and Halstead high schools. After moving to California, he taught and coached at Live Oak and Del Mar schools, Mission Hill, and Santa Cruz, Harbor and Soquel high schools. He retired in 1982. He was active in the local golf community and served as president of the Blue Lake Springs Homeowners Association. He also ran a summer recreation program for many years.Mr. Fishburn married Donnis Wampler on June 27, 1948. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Donn, Placitas, N.M.; two daughters, Terri, Oakland, and Traci Tabler, Santa Cruz; two brothers, Gordon, Illinois, and Alvin, Kansas; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.He was preceded in death by a son, David, in 2006.The family suggests memorials to Soquel Sports Foundation Project, sent in care of Ron Myers, Soquel High School, 401 Old San Jose Road, Soquel, CA 95072 or Santa Cruz High School Track Project, sent in care of John Sisk, Lighthouse Bank, 111 Mission St., Santa Cruz, CA 95060.
