Martha Ann Truman Swoyer 1919 - 2008 Oskaloosa

Funeral services for Martha Ann Truman Swoyer, 89, Oskaloosa, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Oskaloosa United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melinda Harwood officiating. Burial will follow in Hull Grove Cemetery in Winchester.Mrs. Swoyer died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at her home.She was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Hickman Mills, Mo., the daughter of John Vivan and Louella Campbell Truman and the niece of President Harry Truman. She grew up in Grandview on the Truman farm. She graduated from Rushkin High School and Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. She attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, and later graduated from Kansas University School of Law in 1952.Mrs. Swoyer taught business at Winchester High School and Jefferson County North High School in Winchester. She later practiced law in Oskaloosa with her husband at Swoyer and Swoyer Law Firm until November 2006. She and her husband also owned and operated County Seat Variety Store in Oskaloosa from 1981 to 2003.She was a member of Oskaloosa United Methodist Church, Daughters of the Revolution, the Oskaloosa Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Kansas Bar Association and Kansas National Education Association.Mrs. Swoyer married James F. Swoyer Jr. on July 13, 1952, in Hickman Mills, Mo. He died Aug. 29, 2004.She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, J.C. and Fred Truman; and a sister, Callie Truman.Survivors include a son, Karl Swoyer and wife Melynda, Winchester; two brothers, Harry A. and Gilbert Truman, both of Louisburg; four grandchildren, Sara Ann Swoyer Naaf and Jacob, Samuel and Andrew Swoyer; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Marie Naaf.An Order of Eastern Star service will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, where the family will receive friends after the service until 8:30 p.m. Sunday.The family suggests memorials to Jefferson County Hospice or Shriners Children's Hospital, sent in care of O'Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville, 329 Main St., Nortonville, KS 66060.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.beckerdyer.com">www.beckerdyer.com</a>.
