Keenen Michael Brooks

Funeral services for Keenen Michael Brooks, 13, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Christ’s Church in Newkirk, Okla., with the Rev. Stephen Harshman officiating. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at West Junior High School in Lawrence.Keenen died Friday, April 25, 2008, at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.He was born June 1, 1994, in Winfield, the son of Alvernia Dawn Brooks and Dennard Cecil Hutchinson. He grew up and attended school in Lawrence. He was an honor student, played the viola and participated in track and field, where he ran hurdles. He was in eighth grade at West Junior High School at the time of his death.Keenen enjoyed spending summers in Newkirk, Okla., with his grandparents, riding four-wheelers and dirt bikes, and playing baseball. He also enjoyed attending Christ’s Church with his grandparents, participating in youth activities and spending time with his family.Survivors include his mother, of Lawrence; his father, of Coleman, Fla.; his maternal grandparents, Carl and Conelious Riley, Newkirk; his paternal grandparents Artis and Jesse Hutchins, Mount Dora, Fla., and paternal grandmother Vivian Davis, Hopewell, Va.; uncles and aunts Vernon Brooks, Lawrence, Ivan Rochelle and Tahlisha Riley, both of St. Louis, and Phyllis and Mark Bigge, Hays; a great-uncle and great-aunt, Ricardo and Lynn Abbott, Wichita; and his cousins, Corbin and Taylor Riley, Bree Kiser and Alecia Abbott.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Miller-Stahl Funeral Home in Newkirk.The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Hospital for Cancer Research or Victory Junction Gang Camp for children with health issues, sent in care of Eastman National Bank, P.O.
