Albert B. McKee

Services for Albert B. McKee, 97, Topeka, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Burial will be in Seneca City Cemetery.Mr. McKee died Monday, March 24, 2008, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.He was born July 28, 1910, near Havensville, the son of Perry Andrew and Ella Gertrude Jones McKee. He attended a two-room school in America City and graduated from Havensville High School in 1928. He lived in Seneca for 58 years and moved to Topeka in 1997.Mr. McKee served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on Guadalcanal Island. He was worked a short time in St. Joseph, Mo. He worked candling eggs and testing cream at Havensville Grocery Store during the Depression and also farmed for a short time. He worked in a rock quarry in Nemaha County and worked to keep roads passable during winter months.He later worked for area farmers and for the Colorado Highway Department. He opened a gas station in Seneca and worked as a postal carrier from 1942 to 1975. He also laid carpet, tile and linoleum; delivered furniture for Seneca Furniture; and was a part-time bookkeeper for Koelzer Lumber Store.Mr. McKee was a member of Seneca United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 21 in Seneca, a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7458 and was a volunteer fireman in Seneca for many years. He enjoyed growing hybrid irises and playing cards.He married Dorothy Channel on July 28, 1930, in St. Joseph. She died June 29, 2001.Mr. McKee also was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly J. Bohm, on May 12, 1996; a brother, Raymond; and two sisters, Lottie McClain and Golda Diggs.Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Ward and husband Alan, Topeka, and JoAnn Greene, Huntington Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren, including Karl Gehring, Lawrence.The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home before the services.The family suggests memorials to the Seneca Fire Department, Seneca United Methodist Church or Midland Hospice House in Topeka, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
