Violet "Connie" Conard 1924 - 2008 Skagway, Alaska

Memorial services for Violet "Connie" Conard, 83, Skagway, will be this weekend in Skagway.Ms. Conard died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence, Kan.She was born April 27, 1924, in Coolidge, Kan., the daughter of Joseph Harvey and Jessie May Shanstrom Conard. She grew up in western Kansas and lived most of her life in Alaska. She moved from Skagway to Lawrence in February 2008. She received a Bachelor of Science in education from Kansas University, where she lived at Watkins Scholarship Hall.Ms. Conard taught high school for more than 40 years. She started her teaching career in Springfield, Mo., and finished in Skagway. She taught math, English and history and coached high school women's softball. She was inducted into the Alaska Women's Bowlers Hall of Fame and was named Alaska Volunteer of the Year in 2001.She was preceded in death by her brothers, Glen, Dean, Don and John, and her sister, Jessie May Klahr.Ms. Conard is survived by many nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law.The family suggests memorials to the Conard Scholarship Fund in Skagway, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence, Kan.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.warrenmcelwain.com">www.warrenmcelwain.com>a?, subject: Conard.
