R. Richard "Dick" Stanwix 1930 - 2008 Lawrence

Funeral services for R. Richard "Dick" Stanwix, 77, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Clinton Cemetery in Clinton.Mr. Stanwix died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born July 24, 1930, in Lawrence, the son of R.D. and Nellie Armstrong Stanwix. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1949. He attended numerous law enforcement schools and graduated with the 88th session of the FBI academy in 1971.Mr. Stanwix was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in Korea. He joined the Lawrence police department as a patrol officer in 1953 and retired as chief of police in 1987. He later joined the Kansas Insurance Department as an investigator. He was a member of Westside Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge 2, Kansas Chiefs of Police Association, Kansas Peace Officers Association and American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14. He was an avid softball and baseball player and fan, and enjoyed participating in his children's and grandchildren's activities.He married Verna Murphy on Oct. 12, 1952, in Lawrence. They shared more than 55 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Rick and wife Marci, Lawrence; three daughters, LuAnn Metsker and husband David, Sarah Narcomey and husband Morris, and Diane Folks and husband Chuck, all of Lawrence; 10 grandchildren, David, Marla and Grant Metsker, Erin, Kate and Emma Stanwix, Justin and Cole Narcomey, and Maelee and Lydia Folks; and a great-grandson, Dustin Jarett Phillips.Mr. Stanwix was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Janice Sue; two brothers, Clayton and Gene; and a sister, Patricia Harrell.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.The family suggests memorials to Westside Presbyterian Church or Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge 2, sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.rumsey-yost.com">www.rumsey-yost.com</a>.
