Stanley Richard Friesen

Memorial services for Stanley Richard Friesen, 89, Prairie Village, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Old Mission United Methodist Church in Mission. Dr. Friesen died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.He was born Sept. 8, 1918, in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Dietrich F. and Margaret P. Friesen. He was raised in Cheney and attended Friends University in Wichita and Kansas University. He received a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1943 and surgery training and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota.Dr. Friesen practiced and taught surgery for 39 years at Kansas University Medical Center, where he trained many surgeons. He retired in 1989 as professor emeritus of surgery and history of medicine. He was an internationally respected researcher and leader in endocrine surgery. He wrote many books, including textbooks and other books about the history of surgery and medicine, a book about the history of the KU Medical Center and a book about Erasmus.Dr. Friesen married Beth Hattan, of Mount Hope. She preceded him in death.Survivors include two sons, Rick and Robert; two daughters, Peggy and Kathy; a sister, Joyce Marsh; seven grandchildren, Laura, Betsy, Katie, Rick, Matthew, Tae and Claire; and three great-grandchildren, Dean, Roy and Andrew.The family suggests memorials to the Stanley R.
