Alex Edward “Pete” Darting

Funeral services for Alex Edward “Pete” Darting, 87, Rossville, were Monday, March 3, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in Topeka. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery, Rossville. Mr. Darting died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Midland Hospice House.He was born May 25, 1920, in Jackson County, the son of John Cleafes and Ella Nora Boyles Darting. He graduated from Holton High School in 1938.Mr. Darting served during World War II in the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry and spent part of the war as a member of one of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s personal guard units. He owned and operated a filling station and restaurant in Rossville. He then drove a school bus and was a school custodian in Cleburne.He also was a mail carrier in rural Pottawatomie County and a referee for various high school sporting events for many years. He sold insurance for Western Southern Life for 20 years.Mr. Darting married Maude Lenora Andrick on June 4, 1943, in Topeka. She died in 2000.He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Jean, in 1957.Survivors include three sons, Kenneth, Silver Lake, Dennis, Baldwin City, and Steven, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the Pete Darting Scholarship Fund, sent in care of U.S. Bank, P.O.
