Joseph J. “Joe” Kelly

Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph J. “Joe” Kelly, 84, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery in Eudora.Mr. Kelly died Monday, June 2, 2008, at his home. He was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Sarcoxie, Mo., the son of Bill and Una Kelly. He moved to Lawrence in 1951.Mr. Kelly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a longtime banker in the Lawrence community for more than 43 years. He worked for 30 years at Douglas County Bank, where he ended his career as president and continued to serve as a member of the board of directors until 2006. He was active in the Lawrence business and civic communities. He served on the board of directors of the Rice Foundation, Reuter Organ Company, St. John Elementary School, Catholic Social Services, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, Douglas County Extension, Douglas County Fair Board, Red Cross, Visiting Nurses Association and Kansas Banking Board. Mr. Kelly was also a past president of St. John’s Parish Council and the Lions Club, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14.He married Rosalene Seiwald on Aug. 10, 1949. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Galyardt and husband Tom, Lawrence; two sons, Steve and wife Geralyn, Overland Park, and Pat and wife Chris, Olathe; four sisters, Mary Margaret Katzfey and Mildred Trefz, both of Eudora, Frances Olmstead, Overland Park, and Agnes Borland, Farmerville, La.; and eight grandchildren, Patrick F., Justin N., Michael S., Joey and Katy Kelly, and Amanda K., Katelyn K. and Samantha J.
