Doris Annie Norwood

Funeral services for Doris Annie Norwood, 82, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery in Lecompton.Mrs. Norwood died Sunday, July 27, 2008, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka. She was born May 25, 1926, in Tyrone, Okla., the daughter of Noah P. and Annie E. Carson Newman. She was raised in Baldwin City and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1945. She attended Lawrence Business College in 1945.Mrs. Norwood worked at Baldwin State Bank from 1945 to 1951, Hercules Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant from 1951 to 1957 and 1968 to 1972, at the State Capitol as a legislative assistant from 1993 to 1995 and Douglas County Register of Deeds office from 1995 until she retired in 2005. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Epsilon Sigma Omicron and was currently secretary and treasurer of Lawrence Classics/General Federation of Women’s Clubs. She also served as secretary, treasurer and chairwoman of various service efforts. Mrs. Norwood married Wesley MacFarland Norwood on Jan. 15, 1950, in Baldwin City. He died Nov. 27, 2005. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Bill Newman; a sister, Vera Ulrich and husband Keith; and two sisters-in-law, Betty and Jeda Newman.Survivors include two sons, Brian W. Norwood and wife Deborah, Lawrence, and Gregg A. Norwood and wife Candace, Overbrook; two brothers, Lee Newman and wife Dorothy, Baldwin City, and John Newman, Lawrence; a sister, Mary Hutcherson and husband Glen, Overland Park; a sister-in-law, Alice Newman, Lawrence; and six grandchildren, Weston, Brock, Catherine, Emma, Brandon and Sean.Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.The family suggests memorials to the church or a local charity of the donor’s choice.Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com.
