Elsie M. Yazel Mathia

Funeral services for Elsie M. Yazel Mathia, 93, Eudora, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary Eudora Chapel. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.Mrs. Mathia died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Medicalodge in Eudora.She was born Dec. 3, 1914, in Muscotah, the daughter of Joseph Henry and Goldie Mae Marsh Yazel. Mrs. Mathia graduated from Atchison County Community High School. She sold life insurance for American National and was an Avon representative. She was a member of the Eudora United Methodist Church and active in the women’s clubs in the church, including the Quilters Club. She was also active in Girl Scouts and Brownies and was founder of the Golden Agers in Eudora.She married Lloyd Burns on June 5, 1932. He died earlier. She married Ralph O. Mathia on June 4, 1955, in Lawrence. He died Jan. 22, 1983.She was also preceded in death by a son, Paul D. Burns.Survivors include a daughter, Betty C. Mason, De Soto; two sons, Don R. Burns, Early, Iowa, and Gerald R. “Bob” Burns, Siloam Springs, Ark.; a stepdaughter, La Donna Schmidt, De Soto; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and loved ones.The family will meet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary-Eudora Chapel.The family suggests memorials be made in her name to Eudora United Methodist Church or to Medicalodge in Eudora, may be sent in care of the mortuary, 1003 John L.
