Harvey John McArthur

Graveside services for Harvey John McArthur, 89, Baldwin City, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.Mr. McArthur died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at the Baldwin Care Center. He was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Salina, the son of Clarence and Myrtle Markham McArthur. He graduated from Salina High School. He received a degree in secondary education from Kansas University in 1941. Mr. McArthur was inducted into the U.S. Army on June 21, 1941, at Fort Leavenworth and served in the United States and in the European Theater until the end of World War II in 1945. He was discharged with the rank of captain.He was a teacher in Burr-ton and then at Central Junior High School in Lawrence while working on a master’s degree, which he received in 1949. He then became a representative for the Scott Foresman Text Book Co. After five years with the company, he served in the Lecompton public schools as a teacher and principal while working to complete his doctoral degree from KU.Mr. McArthur became curriculum director in the Liberty, Mo., school district and later was a professor at Bethany College in Lindsborg and Washburn University in Topeka.He married Madge Eva Jones on June 16, 1941, in Stafford. She survives, of the home.
