A memorial gathering for Carolyn Campbell Conboy, 80, Lawrence, will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Ms. Conboy died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Feb. 25, 1928, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Frederick B. and Clela Naomi Gillette Campbell.She graduated from Kansas University in 1950. She was a freelance writer and editor. She worked for Row Peterson Publishers in Evanston, Ill., the KU Alumni Association, Bureau of Child Research, Allen Press in Lawrence and Sosland Publishers in Kansas City, Mo.She was a member of Pi Beta Phi alumni and served as the group’s secretary. She was president of the Quill Club at KU and secretary of Douglas County UNESCO. She was also a member of the Unitarian Fellowship. She enjoyed creative writing, photography, tennis, horseback riding and piano.She married William A. Conboy in 1949. They later divorced.Survivors include a daughter, Connie Conboy, Las Vegas; two sons, Frederick P. Conboy, Irvine, Calif., and William Andrew “Andy” Conboy Jr., Lawrence; a brother, John Campbell, Fairway; three grandchildren, Leroy Smith Jr., Lindsay Smith and Lamar Smith; her caregiver, Craig Vann; and her beloved cat, Todd.The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society or for disabled veterans, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent to www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Conboy.
