Orville D. Jones 1925 - 2008 Ottawa

Funeral services for Orville D. Jones, 82, Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa.Mr. Jones died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Village Manor Nursing Home in Ottawa.He was born Aug. 28, 1925, in LeLoup, the son of James and Florence White Jones. He attended Ottawa schools and was a Franklin County resident for nearly all of his life. Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Dec. 1, 1943, to Jan. 26, 1946, and attained the rank of seaman first class. He served in Kansas City, Mo.; Farragut, Idaho; Bremerton, Wash.; and in the Seventh Fleet on the USS LST 467. He received the American Area Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with a star, and Philippine Liberation Medal with a star. He worked as a meat cutter for 43 years. He started under the GI Bill for Chaney's, Waymire's and Pence IGA, all in Ottawa. He worked at Rusty's IGA in Lawrence for 17 years and retired in 1987. He then worked at the Lighthouse Bay Marina as a night watchman, for Dick Williams at Green Acres, the Pizza Shack, Leadbetter Homes, Dodson's International and tended bar at the Ottawa Country Club. He and his wife also ran the Youth Center in Ottawa in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He married Darlene West on March 30, 1946, in Ottawa. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Jean Sims, Olathe; five grandchildren, Darleta Edwards, Ace Sims, Roger Cannady Jr., Deborah Swenson and Pepper Hamilton; and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Delene Turner; a brother, James L. Jones; and three sisters, Kathryn Clark, Rosalie Abshire and Inez Fitzgerald.Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Saturday at the mortuary, where the family will receive them from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday before the services.The family suggests memorials to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation or Children's Mercy Hospital, sent in care of the mortuary, 235 S.
