Helen Juilette Kingcannon

Funeral services for Helen Juilette Kingcannon, 78, Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa. Private family burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date.Mrs. Kingcannon died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at her home.She was born June 22, 1930, in Alexandria, La., the daughter of Willie and Edith Johnson Glasper. She graduated from Peabody High School in Alexandria, La., in 1948. She attended Tuskegee Institute of Alabama, Leland College in Baker, La., Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.; and Grambling College in Ruston, La. She moved from Lawrence to Ottawa in 1972.Mrs. Kingcannon worked as a cook for Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity at Kansas University during the 1960s. She was a social worker for 10 years during the 1980s and 1990s for the Mid-America Council on Aging. She was a member of Praise Temple in Lawrence and a counselor for the Women’s Department of God & Christ Churches.She married Clarence Jones in 1950. They divorced. She married Louis Kingcannon in 1968. They divorced.Survivors include a daughter, Mary Louise Jones, Lawrence; a son, Cornelius Kingcannon and wife Jennifer S., Independence, Mo.; an adopted daughter, Sue Driskill, Ottawa; three stepdaughters, Sharon Jackson and Emma Cushinberry, both of Topeka, and Mary Durant, Kansas City, Mo.; three stepsons, Joseph, David and Emmanuel Kingcannon, all of Topeka; a brother, Junius A. Bowman, Phoenix; three grandchildren, Darrian, Mirshea and Layla Kingcannon; many stepgrandchildren; many stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Edith Gilbert and Geri Stagg-Moore.Mrs. Kingcannon was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, W. L. Glasper Jr. and Harold B. Stagg; and two stepdaughters, Carol and Annie Kingcannon.Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary, where the family will receive them from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday before the services.The family suggests memorials to the Helen J.
