Curtis H. “Pete” VanGundy

Services for Curtis H. “Pete” VanGundy, 96, Emporia, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia.Mr. VanGundy died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.He was born April 16, 1911, in Neosho Rapids, the son of Ira Curtis and Ada Susanna Erickson VanGundy. He moved from Chanute to Emporia in 1978.Mr. VanGundy worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway for 45 years. He was a section foreman from 1952 to 1956 in Lawrence and track supervisor for the eastern division in Chanute. He was a member of Cedar Masonic Lodge 103 in Chanute, York Rite of Lawrence and the Retired and Veteran Railway Employees.He married Rachel Elizabeth Parker on March 11, 1930, in Ottawa. She died July 16, 1998.A son, Lt. Cmdr. Duane VanGundy, also died earlier.Survivors include two sons, Francis L., Rockbridge Baths, Va., and Harold R., Anaheim, Calif.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, sent in care of the funeral home, 808 W. 12th Ave., Emporia, 66801.
