Independence, Kan. - Funeral services for The Rev. Philip Eugene "Gene" Riley, 82, Independence, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Independence. Private burial will be in Neodesha City Cemetery.The Rev. Riley died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Golden Living Nursing Home in Neodesha.He was born May 19, 1925, in Coffeyville, the son of Robert F. and Nell Martin Riley. He attended school in Neodesha, where he graduated in 1943. He later graduated from Baker University in 1949 and Iliff School of Theology in 1957.The Rev. Riley served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He taught music in eastern Kansas. He served as United Methodist Church pastor at many churches in eastern Kansas until he retired in 1990.He then served as a supply pastor for several area churches. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Independence, the Mid-Continent Band, Monday Music Club and Neewollah Campers.The Rev. Riley married LaVerne Schuman on Dec. 18, 1947, in Baldwin City. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Philip D., Lawrence; a daughter, Annette Condon, Atlanta; a brother, Wayne, Bella Vista, Ark.; and two sisters, Lucille Hall, Powhattan, and Lois Johnson, Bella Vista, Ark.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home to register.
