Memorial services for Franklin Detroit Smith, 86, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Washington Creek Church of the Brethren in southwest Douglas County. Inurnment will be at a later date in the church cemetery.Mr. Smith died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born March 26, 1921, in Lone Star, the son of Detroit Franklin and Lola Myrtle Flory Smith.He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1939 and later attended Kansas University.Mr. Smith served in the Merchant Marines during World War II from 1942 to 1946.He and his business partner, Glen Spees, owned and operated Capital City Oil in Topeka for many years. He was a member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 in Lawrence.He married Beth Ilene Brown. She preceded him in death. He married Gladys M. Musick. She also preceded him in death.Survivors include three daughters, Lynn Holthaus and husband Charles, Julie Mead and husband Mike, and Anita Maichel, all of Topeka; a son, Jim Musick and wife Verla, Topeka; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and longtime friend, Imogene Anderson, Lawrence.The family suggests memorials to Washington Creek Church of the Brethren, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.rumsey-yost.com">www.rumsey-yost.com</a>.
