Vernon H. Jones

Memorial services for Vernon H. Jones, 92, Lawrence, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will be at a later date in Portland Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, N.Y.Mr. Jones died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Sept. 13, 1915, in Ripley, N.Y., the son of Vernon C. and Hattie B. Hamilton Jones. He received a bachelor’s degree in education in 1948 from State University of New York in Fredonia, N.Y., and a Master of Arts degree in educational administration in 1952 from the University of Iowa. He had done additional graduate work at the University of Michigan.Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 2nd Armored Division in Europe and Africa and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He served as superintendent of schools for Lincoln Schools in Ypsilanti, Mich., 1961-1968. He was a professor emeritus of education at Eastern Michigan University and director of pre-student teaching and admissions at E.M.U. for many years.Mr. Jones was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Education Fraternity at the University of Iowa. He received the Honorary Alumnus Award and the Distinguished Service Citation, both from E.M.U. He was also a member of the Michigan Education Association. He was a former Boy Scouts of America scoutmaster, member of the Masonic Lodge and current member of Stoney Creek United Methodist Church in Ypsilanti, Mich.He married Violet E. Cornell on June 22, 1946, in Brocton, N.Y. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Brian V., Lawrence, and Stephen A., Detroit; two daughters, Judy K. Taylor, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Cindy Johnson, Lawrence; and five grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.The family suggests memorials to the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Jones.
