Marion L. Howey 1916 - 2008 Lawrence
Private inurnment services for Marion L. Howey, 91, Lawrence, will be held at the Pioneer Cemetery in Lawrence. Mrs. Howey died Jan. 6, 2008, at the Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence.She was born July 5, 1916, in Leavenworth, the daughter of E.C. and Ethel Tharp Dresser.She graduated from St. Mary College in Leavenworth in 1938, and also received a bachelor of science degree from Kansas University. In 1967, she earned a master of arts degree in library service from Columbia University in New York City.Mrs. Howey worked as a reference librarian at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and Economics, and as the head of government documents at KU. She retired in 1986.Mrs. Howey served on the Lawrence Traffic Commission from 1958 to 1965. She successfully filed a petition with the Lawrence City Commission to construct sidewalks in the Hillcrest Benefit District. She enjoyed sports.She married Richard S. Howey on June 18, 1941, in Leavenworth. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1993.Survivors include two daughters, Susan Peter and husband Rainier Serbser, Mission, and Judith Theis and husband Franklin, Berryton; a son, Richard and wife Kathy, Flagstaff, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Allison and Johnny Kurtz, Peter and Tyler Theis, and R.J. Howey; and two great-grandchildren.
