Services for J.W. "Chub" Phillips, 84, Columbia, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Columbia. Mr. Phillips died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, in Columbia from cancer.He was born April 25, 1923, in Columbia, the son of Robert Paul and Anna Barton Phillips. He attended Hickman High School, the University of Missouri and mortuary school in Kansas City, Mo.Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He worked as a funeral director from 1950 to 1970 and for the city of Columbia from 1970 to 1981.He was a member of Twilight Lodge 114 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, Tiger Shrine, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 280, Cosmopolitan Club, American Legion, Missouri Tiger Quarterback Club, Columbia Country Club and First Baptist Church.Mr. Phillips married Mary Jo Aufranc on Oct. 25, 1947, in Columbia. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include three daughters, Paula Phillips, Lawrence, Kan., Sally Hyde, Columbia, and Nancy Deis, Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Amy and Adam Deis, Lucas and Ashley Hyde and Eliska Valehrachova; and a great-grandchild, Gage Hyde.He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and James.The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the church before the services.The family suggests memorials to Shriner's Children's Hospital, sent in care of Parker Funeral Home, 22 N. 10th St., Columbia, MO 65201.
