Helen Clarissa King Chanay 1906 - 2008 Wellsville
Funeral services for Helen Clarissa King Chanay, 102, Wellsville, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Wellsville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Vinland Cemetery.Mrs. Chanay died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at Ottawa Retirement Village.She was born Jan. 9, 1906, in Vinland, the daughter of Udah and Mary Rodgers King. She grew up and attended school in Vinland. She graduated from high school in 1924. She attended Emporia Teachers College and Kansas University. Mrs. Chanay taught at Coal Creek Elementary School near Vinland and Linwood Elementary School. She and her husband owned and operated Chanay Truck Line for more than 30 years. She also was a homemaker. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge 754, Wellsville Baptist Church, Berean Sunday School and Garden Club. She married Artie Chanay on March 5, 1927, in Kansas City, Kan. They shared more than 42 years of marriage. He died in 1969.Mrs. Chanay was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Keith and Merle Wayne; a sister, Jessie Fenton; a brother, Ivan King; a great-grandson, Kristopher Stockard; and a son-in-law, Jack Ryburn.Survivors include three daughters, Leila Stovall and husband Bernard, Wichita, Lorene Stockard and husband Melvin, Princeton, and Mary Ryburn, Ottawa; two sons, Marlin Chanay and wife Betty, Edgerton, and Larry Chanay and wife Julia, Lenexa; a daughter-in-law, Helen Chanay, Topeka; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 16 stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson's Funeral Home.The family suggests memorials to the Helen Chanay Memorial Fund, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
