Betty M. Gates 1946 - 2008 Lawrence
Funeral services for Betty M. Gates, 61, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be in Stoney Pointe Cemetery in Douglas County.Mrs. Gates died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at her home.She was born March 18, 1946, in Newton, the daughter of James Ross Corkill and Beryl Schuessler Grim. She graduated from Kansas University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in English education and a Master of Arts in counseling. She moved to Lawrence seven months ago and had lived in Baldwin City since 1978.Mrs. Gates taught English at high schools in Torrance, Calif., and Eudora. She was a high school counselor at Wellsville High School for 25 years and retired in 2001. She was a member of the Lawrence Potters Guild.She married Patrick R. Gates on Nov. 26, 1968, in Valley Center. He died Aug. 5, 2007.Survivors include her mother, Beryl Grim, Nacogdoches, Texas; and two sisters, Cora Ray, Mission, and Susan McGinn, Garden City.
