J. Frank Spencer

Funeral services for J. Frank Spencer, 91, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery in eastern Shawnee County.Mr. Spencer died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Baldwin Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.He was born Jan. 28, 1917, in Big Springs, the son of Harley I. and Cora Schaffer Spencer. In 1955, he moved to Lawrence from the Stull area.Mr. Spencer was a retired driver for Graham Trucking Co. He was also a farmer.He was a member of the Church of Christ. For more than 20 years, Mr. Spencer volunteered as an escort at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was a longtime Red Cross blood donor and a member of the Teamsters Union.Mr. Spencer married Freda Wulfkuhle on Dec. 30, 1942, in Big Springs. She died April 25, 2004.Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Martin and husband Gerald, Baldwin City; a son, Calvin and wife Shirley, Lawrence; four grandchildren, Robin, Karen, Michelle and Jed; one stepson, Terry; four great-granddaughters; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.The family will greet friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.The family suggests memorials in his name to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Spencer.
