Margaret Robey Beer

Memorial services for Margaret Robey Beer, 88, Lawrence, will be announced by Warren-McElwain Mortuary at a later date.Mrs. Beer died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at her home.She was born March 16, 1919, in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Robert Earl and Lillian Katura Finney Robey. She graduated from Manual Arts High School, where she was captain of the women’s field hockey team. She also attended the University of California, Los Angeles. Mrs. Beer was a paralegal for Security First National of Los Angeles and retired in 1944. While living in California, she was featured in glamour photos in Look magazine during World War II.After moving to Lawrence, she appeared on Centron television and was a fashion model for Weaver’s Department Store. She also worked for the Society for the Study of Evolution. She was a member of P.E.O. International and University Women’s Club at Kansas University. She enjoyed her family, gourmet cooking, music, travel and sports, especially KU basketball. She was a member of the Democratic Party and followed politics. She married Robert Beer on April 6, 1941, in Las Vegas. They shared 60 years of marriage. He died Dec. 19, 2001.Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Beer, of the home; and a nephew, Robert Spencer Hiatt, Glendale, Calif.The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Beer.
