Edna Mae Mills

Funeral services for Edna Mae Mills, 87, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.Mrs. Mills died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.She was born July 15, 1921, in Johnstown, Neb., the daughter of James and Anna Zelig Graff. She graduated from Corning High School in 1939, where she was a power forward on the girl’s basketball team. Mrs. Mills attended teaching training and taught at Willow Glenn for one year. She moved to St. Joseph, Mo., where she attended Platte-Guard Business College. She became a secretary for Boy Scouts of America Council for seven years. She also worked as a secretary for Leslie Tupy in Lawrence and later served as secretary for Ecumenical Christian Ministries for more than 20 years.She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, and served as an officer and president of the district UMW. She was active in Girl Scouts in the 1950s and ’60s; was a Cordley Elementary School PTA member in the 1960s; and was a member and officer in Lawrence Knife & Fork Club.She married Edson F. “Ed” Mills on Aug. 14, 1948, in Lawrence. He survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Larry and wife Patrice, San Diego; a daughter, Carol Atkinson and husband Lou, Warrensburg, Mo.; and two sisters, Vivien Venneberg, Holton, and Margaret Osterhaus, Topeka.Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
