Katie Lue “Kay” Tomlinson

Concordia — Services for Katie Lue “Kay” Tomlinson, 91, Concordia, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Concordia. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Concordia.Mrs. Tomlinson died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Cloud County Health Center.She was born Jan. 11, 1917, in Altus, Okla., the daughter of George S. and Sophia K. Smith.She earned a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma College of Women and a master’s degree from Emporia State University. She taught English and home economics in Milan, Vinland, Woodbine, Dwight and Burns.In 1964, she was hired at the new Cloud County Community College, where she taught English and was head of the department for 21 years. The college awarded her the first Outstanding College Educator Award.She served on the Kansas Council College English Association, was state vice-president for Delta Kappa Gamma, and organized the Phi Theta Kappa national honor fraternity at CCCC and became a state adviser.She served on the restoration committee for the Brown Grand Theater, the Church of Epiphany’s vestry and St. Anne’s Guild.She was a poet, gardener and grandmother. Her hobbies included knitting, bridge and participating in the Improvement Club.She married A.J. “Tommy” Tomlinson, in 1938 in Guthrie, Okla. He preceded her in death.She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and three sisters.Survivors include a daughter, Carol Conway and husband Barry, St. Pete Beach, Fla.; a son, Kent Tomlinson and wife Carol, Lawrence; three granddaughters, Angela Conway, Janalynn Dixon and Lisa Tomlinson; a great-grandson, Josh Howard; and many nieces and nephews.Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home in Concordia, and before services Tuesday at the church.The family suggests memorials to “A Grand Day” in care of the Brown Grand Theater, 310 W.
