Meriden — Funeral services for James C. Burkett, 84, Ozawkie, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Meriden Chapel in Meriden. Burial will be in Meriden Cemetery.Mr. Burkett died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.He was born Oct. 20, 1924, in Excel, Ala., the son of Jessie Lee and Medie Sue Harrison Burkett.Mr. Burkett worked at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Topeka, retiring after 30 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving from 1944 to 1946 and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a Past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Goodyear Post 2187 in Topeka and was a member and Past Commander of V.F.W. Meriden Post 10815 and a life member of Ozawkie American Legion Post 225.He married Anna L. James in 1943 in Ohio. She died Aug. 31, 1973. He married Helen O. Johnson Dooley on Dec. 22, 1973, in Topeka. She died Dec. 28, 2004.Survivors include a son, James N., Ozawkie; a daughter, Donna Jean Bissonette, Ozawkie; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.Friends may call from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
