Doreatha L. Moon

Coffeyville — Services for Doreatha L. Moon, 97, Coffeyville, were Dec. 4 at First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.Mrs. Moon died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.She was born July 9, 1911, in Nowata County, Okla., the daughter of Albert J. and Emma Sophia Mohr Collins. She grew up in Nowata County and attended school in South Coffeyville and Delaware.Mrs. Moon operated a dairy farm in the Coffeyville area with her second husband, Elmer. They moved to San Pedro, Calif., in 1942. In 1946 they moved to Chanute, where they owned and operated the New Castle Café. They returned to Coffeyville in 1957 and operated the New Castle Café until 1972. After her husband’s death, she worked at Tal’s Drive-in Theatre where she was known for cooking her Moon Burger. She retired from Tal’s when it closed after working there for 20 years.Mrs. Moon was a member of First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville, the Keystone Sunday school class, and was active in the church quilters group. She also was a member of Westside Workers and the Home Extension Club and was active in the Salvation Army Auxiliary and the Red Cross.She married Elmer McAfee in 1929. He preceded her in death in 1930. She married Elmer Wayne Moon in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1976. Mrs. Moon also was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita Lucille Moon, in 1963.Survivors include three daughters, Margie McAfee Montgomery-Hull, Lawrence; Joyce Pridgeon, Grove, Okla.; and Jewel Hunt, Coffeyville; two sons, Elmer Wayne Moon Jr., Coffeyville, and Edward Moon, Wichita; two brothers, Daniel Collins, Marysville, Wash., and Wilder “Toby” Collins, McKinney, Texas; a sister, Kathaleen Hand, Tulsa, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
